President Trump sued Twitter, Facebook, and Google after his account suspensions following the January 6th, 2021, riot at the US Capitol. However, a judge dismissed this lawsuit in 2022, rejecting the argument that the company was a state actor or that Section 230 is unconstitutional. Later, Elon Musk's X agreed to pay President Trump about $10 million to settle his lawsuit against Twitter. This settlement was in addition to an estimated $250 million that Musk had already contributed towards Trump's election campaign.
Following the dismissal of his lawsuit, Trump appealed the decision before the US Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals. However, lawyers representing Trump, former Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey, and what is now X moved to dismiss this appeal. The lawsuit accused Twitter, now owned by DOGE head Elon Musk, of violating the First Amendment when it banned his account in 2021.
Despite his significant following and long-standing presence on the platform, Trump has repeatedly expressed grievances about perceived anti-conservative bias. This came to a head when Twitter, for the first time, decided to take action against one of his tweets that violated its terms of service.
